Has now been demolished to make way for a hotel.
I'm sad to see the Artichoke go. In recent times it lost its lustre and I hadn't ventured inside for at least five years. This place will always give me good memories though - popping in here straight off the Portishead bus for the first beer of a Saturday evening en route to the Purple Heart at the Thekla. Back then the inside was relatively plush, with a nice upstairs drinking area - I used to feel quite posh in here. The drinks were a classic Britpop choice, I usually settled on a Caffreys (remember that?). I also used to be able to get served underage which probably helped their cause. The place was reputedly haunted too.
Ah well...
