ORIGINAL REVIEW Nov 2021
This is a proper old school boozer.The beehive pertched high in the tree would take a lot of reaching if you wanted honey,apparently the guv'nor wife is incharge of this side of the business !The interior is very traditional with a pool table in a side room and most of the regulars gathered around the L shaped tap room.Low ceilings make it cosy and there was a warm welcome from the guv'nor and the locals alike.
The two real ale were both Newby Wyke USS Winston S Churchill and White Squall (NBSS 4),both pleasingly above 4.5% ABV.Can't understand how this hasn't made the 2022 GBG,it really is a must visit in Grantham and the sort of place you could easily stay much longer than first planned.Enjoy it's authenticity.
UPDATE
A musty pint of Newby Wyke White Squall left a lot to be desired on a revisit,maybe the horse racing regulars focus on the lager.Throughput on real ale maybe a problem in hot weather.

Another Grantham pub stuck in the 80s, décor-wise (and nothing wrong with that, in my humble opinion). Take a moment outside to observe the unique ‘living’ pub sign – a real beehive, up in the tree outside. Inside, the pub is a multi-roomer knocked through a bit. Enter to the main bar with a room off to left and another beyond with a pool table. Red fabric banquettes throughout and third length dark varnish wood panelling too. Look out for the original 18th century sign behind bar and be aware that the gents are an outside dash. Three pumps with just one on; Newby Wyke White Bear Fine). Our visit was topped-off when a local pumped the jukebox with Chas & Dave, which seemed rather fitting. I liked it here. A couple more ales would really make a difference though, it feels like the sort of place that could support it.
