Pleasant pub just off the Aylesbury-Buckingham Road, watch out for the sign for Hardwick. A quick nose inside revealed it to be much as K found below. But we enjoyed the lovely garden blessed with a brief spell of warm sunshine. Just TT landlord, which was pleasantly served though not in the best of conditions.

Open all day, a useful stop if you're passing through

Negating the below review of a previous owner, after a short period of closure this pub changed hands at the end of 2018. Known as The Olde Jug for a brief time, this was originally two lacemakers' cottages dating back to 1678 and retains original oak beams and inglenook fireplace. This is now best described as a nu-country pub (it was renovated in 2014 and the oak beams sandblasted) with small car park and walled garden out front. Inside it appears to have once been multi-roomed, but is now all knocked through. Entry is into a former lobby, with open, door-less entrances to the left or right. The right-hand one leads to into the bar area with modern flagstone flooring, a brick chimney stack with modern to the left, a couple of tables and chairs with half-settle-type benches and the bar hidden against the rear wall behind the stack. The room to the right is an ante-room with a couple of dining tables. A corridor leads to a dining area which is also used as a function room, with access to a paved courtyard via the same corridor. Sharps' Doom Bar, St Austell Tribute and St Austell Cousin Jack - the latter a decent pint. I accompanied this with a "Kilimanjaro" sausage roll (made with African spices) which was very decent indeed. Another Bucks resurrection to be applauded, but as a freehouse, you feel they're missing a trick without including a local ale or two.

We are a welcoming picturesque country gastropub with an unusually large range of Organic wine. We pride ourselves on our locally sourced, seasonally influenced gastro menu.

Located just outside Aylesbury in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside our 17th Century pub is the perfect place to unwind in front of a roaring log fire, or feel the warmth of spring and summer in our generous and peaceful walled gardens and outdoor patio. We are within three miles of Whitchurch, Watermead, Buckingham Park and Bierton and offer the tranquility of a country pub.

We can cater for functions such as wakes, parties and anniversaries or business events in our dining room or, when warmer, on our patio. We also cater for families with members who need or choose to eat a particular diet – most of our menu is gluten and dairy free and we have delicious options for vegetarians and vegans. We are both family friendly – high chairs are available – and dog friendly (one side of the pub has a flagstone floor). If you enjoy our food and service you may also consider us to meet your outside catering needs.
