Nicely refurbished John Willies pub facing Springfield Park on the outskirts of Rochdale. It used to be a large two roomed local. The initial refurbishment was finished and within a month a major fire meant that they had to start all over again. It's much more foody than it was but there is still a small tap room and they are happy for you just to sit and have a pint in about half of the lounge area. It's all been done in dark wood with alcoves etc. and flag floors. As a refurb it's one of the best I've seen for a while. There are several handpumps on the bar, last night they were selling Lees Bitter and the current Lees seasonal Brassed Off. I had the Brassed Off and a very decent pint it was too. Friendly efficient bar staff and a nice atmosphere. I may well have to bring Ms CAMRA up here for pub grub before the summer's out. At the back is a large bowling green, which was why I was here last night. It's a decent pub, that's trying hard. (June 2010)

I did indeed take Ms Camra here last Saturday and she thought it was very good. We didn't actually eat here, but the plan was to have a couple in here and then move on. Two turned into three as she liked it so much. The first pint I had was the new Lees seasonal Strawbeery. I wasn't too impressed and I thought it may well be about to go, but it wasn't really poor enough to take back. When I went up to the bar for a pint of Lees bitter as our second drink I mentioned this to the barman, who turned out to be the landlord. He said, "Sorry about that, have this next one on me". Excellent customer service. Well done sir! I'm upping the rating by a point just for his top class attitude. We'll no doubt be back soon.
