Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Hogarths
Much less of a 'gin palace' than some of their other outlets, but still more appealing in a semi-traditional way than many other city-centre pubs. With three of four handpumps in use, it was good to find all these occupied by Wily Fox beers: Crafty Fox, Blonde Vixen (£1.35, half) and Karma Citra.

Chain pubs can be rather depressing places, being exactly the same in whichever town you happen to be. Hogarths, while maintaining a corporate image, at least do it with a bit of class, with reproduction Edwardian fittings in (generally) good looking buildings. There are four hand pumps, with their own best bitter, The Bruiser, plus Wily Fox Dark Flagon (a rum porter) and two from Bank Top: a modern pale with Nelson Sauvin hops and a dark mild, which was very good and only £1.25 for a half. The place was busy with plenty of people talking, drinking and watching the cricket on TV (another England wicket had fallen in the time it took me to walk from the Bull & Royal). Friendly service, pleasant atmosphere, attractive surroundings and good beer at low prices - this is a business model that Wetherspoons should consider adopting.

this chain seems to be springing up at a rapid rate in the main drinking areas of northern towns. they are sort of Victorian gin palaces (basically drinking barns with vintage interiors)) in the Amber taverns group. they also offer very cheap and well-kept real ale. not bad and at least better than the vast majority on this strip.
