A sign in the door of the George and Dragon warns of strobe lighting, but thankfully the bulbs weren’t flashing during my recent Monday evening visit. There was some nineties dance music playing which the handful of boisterous locals at the bar seemed to enjoy. I spotted a dartboard in the right hand side of the pub and over to the left are a DJ booth with massive speakers and a real fire. Access is gained up some steps to another room behind the bar where there is a second dartboard and the toilets. I spotted a plasma screen that was switched off and I didn’t notice any advertisements for sports coverage.
There is no real ale here so I had to make do with a generic lager that was poured by the polite enough barmaid.

This is a rough and ready boozer that won’t suit everybody’s tastes, mine included. I do not envisage a return visit anytime soon.

Previously the Entertainer, and before that The George, the pub has now reverted back to its original name (first recorded in 1478. It is once one of Sittingbourne's main inns, used by pilgrims on the way to Canterbury and an important stopping point between London and the coast, but only a small part of it remains as a high street pub, its failure as a hotel put down to the coming of the railway. It is reputedly haunted and reports of a ghost dating back to the Civil War have been made.

Now it's rather a sad place, the single large bar to the front featuring bare boards, 18th Century brickwork, gaming machines and a reasonable atmosphere. Some of the original 14th Century architectural features have been uncovered by recent renovation. Sadly, there is no real ale, so I wouldn't currenty include it on a crawl, and the clientele make it a little tiresome to come here when there are better venues neaby.
