Side-street pub, close to the seafront but definitely not a tourist destination... although things do seem to have improved here over the years. Yes, it's still a local boozer with a pool table, but the interior has been smartened up. Food is also available noon to 19:00 daily from the 'Shack at the Back' in the beer garden. The pair of handpumps offer a changing selection of real ales, with London Pride and Charabanc ruby ale from Wriggly Monkey in Bicester (£4.00, so-so) on when I visited.

A Victorian corner pub which serves it local community. The single small U-shaped bar (I think there was a second bar at the back, but that appeared closed) has a variety of seating arrangements and is carpeted. The regulars were friendly and welcoming, and the staff were pleasant. There is a small garden with a children’s play area at the back. The décor is homely, and the various prints and plaques on the wall recall the eponymous battle. They run theme nights and other social events, though it must get a bit crowded. TV screens show Sky Sports, the chat is mainly manly, and the ambiance is convivial. Two ales on, Courage Best and Wells's Eagle, but they don't move quickly enough to stay on top form. The Wells was on its last legs but still drinkable. A good place to pop in if passing on foot or by bicycle, and a decent local that represents part of our social history.

The Heights of Alma is located at the end of a residential street and unless one knew of its existence it probably wouldn’t be chanced upon. This is a compact pub with two bars from which standard draught and Bombardier can be purchased. I decided upon a pint of Bombardier, which was served by the friendly landlady, and a packet of ready salted to pop my 40p pickled egg into – Certainly hit the spot!
I didn’t venture into the rear bar as there was a game of Kentish darts in progress, of which I know little as I prefer a board with some lipstick. The front bar was quiet with a couple of regulars who kept themselves to themselves. There is a plasma screen and Sky Sports is advertised, but it was switched off.

The locals were a little suspicious of an ‘outsider’ walking in at 22:30, but I have found this is many pubs. I liked it in here and would return if in the area.
