The George and Dragon is a Gastro pub tucked away in the more residential back streets of Sandwich, which include the deceptively named High Street which nowadays apart from the section near the Quay and the bridge over the river is also residential. Dating from the 15th century it’s white and green exterior blends well with other properties on this street and if it wasn’t for the pub sign it would not obviously entice you to walk up Fisher Street.
Internally the small traditional bar area to the right is wooden floored with a beamed ceiling and a commanding stone fireplace. Then the rest of the interior is set aside for dining in what looks like a conservatory type extension to the original pub building. And then beyond this is a pleasant courtyard garden that you can actually enter from a path on The High Street at the back.
Apparently this one has had a bit of a chequered recent history and was actually closed earlier this year before reopening under new management in June and recent trip advisor reviews would indicate they are making a decent fist of running it.
The small bar has four ale hand pumps and all four were on the go for our visit. Three were clipped with Harvey’s Sussex Best, Otter Brewery Bitter and Timothy Taylor Knowle Spring and the fourth had an acme paper pump clip proclaiming Young’s which turned out to be Young’s Bitter and the Otter andBitter and Knowle Springs we tried were in good condition.
We didn’t eat here so cannot pass judgement on what is clearly the KSP of this one, and it was pleasant enough for a pint, especially if you can use the garden.

Totally covered in scaffolding on my visit so can't comment on the exterior, it is down a quiet back street and actually looked closed. But the door did open and there were people inside! Its food orientated with a kitchen at the rear party open to the restaurant. The area by the door is given over to casual drinking but this would fill quickly, leaving the uncorftably formal large tables set out for food groups.

Beamed in the bar area, also a court yard at the rear.

3 real ales availableincluding a localish one (Wantsum) on my visit. Beer is slightly warm but well kept.
