With time to kill before my train I drifted into the lower bar and was pleasantly surprised. It certainly helped that the shapely barmaid was wearing a pair of hotpant ,and was dealing with a stag party ordering slowly with distain. There is a flatscreen in the open plan interior, while there is a room to the right and a sunken snug down some steps to the rear. The large outside terrace was proving very popular in the sun.
Four handpumps were offering Bristol Beer Factory Nova,Castlecombe Pendulum,Bath Brew House Lupulus and Mad Squirrel London Porter in good nick.
Upstairs there is another bar with the same ale selection but much calmer with modern hip furniture and a quieter place to eat and drink.
This pub was so much better than the nearby GBG listed Duke of Wessex and Garricks Head, and is worth popping into, although beware that the yoof market dominates the lower bar.

A good sized city centre pub that looks as though it has recently had a makeover. The main bar counter is on the left as you walk in, with a raised area in the rear right corner. This is carpeted with a few mirrors built in to the walls and some floral wallpaper. The flooring elsewhere is mostly reclaimed wood boards and a few slate tiles.

There’s nothing really wrong with it, but like so many places that have had a makeover, and also try to attract different people at different time of the day, it’s all a bit generic and lacking in any real personality (the barmaid thus fitted in well – the only words I got out of her the whole time were “Five pounds eight-five”). There were a couple of leather sofa’s in the window at the front which was a decent enough spot to watch the world go by. I noticed a projector screen here, although it was rolled up out of sight. Presumably it comes in to use to show major sporting fixtures. Decor is the usual shade of gastro-pub green painted on wood panelling, with cream plaster above.

There is a pleasant patio area at the back, with a large umbrella covering and infra-red heaters. The food menu looks to be a decent enough pub grub offering, with most of the mains being around the £8 - £12 mark, and there was also a small specials board. The pub is open until 1:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays (and, strangely, one Sunday a month), so presumably has quite a different feel then to how it was mid afternoon. Downstairs is another bar known as the Vaults, with exposed stone walls. This is accessable either from the pub above or the rear courtyard.

Beers on tap were all from the Box Stem Brewery with their Cork Red Handed, Chuffin’ Ale and Derail Ale. Ciders were Strongbow and the excellent Orchard Pig from Glastonbury.
