Long fronted former coaching inn, slightly sunken compared to the roadway. Inside is a multi-area mish-mash, sort of aged but seems too new to be truly authentic and is fairly plain in terms of décor. There’s an open-plan restaurant room to the left, with the main bar area straight on from the entrance. Modern wood floor, wood etc. Polite service behind the bar which had three ales, two Island brews and DBC Jurassic. Sadly my choice of Island Nipper Bitter wasn’t up to much, hazy and bitty. We ate here from the menu of upmarket pub grub and am pleased to report it was good portions, tasty, home-made and sensibly priced. It’s a fair bet if you want grub but it didn’t really strike me as a drinking experience.

Situated on the main road through the village, the Dark Horse was originally called the Red Lion but appears to have had a bit of an inconsistent recent history with name changes via the Smart Fox and Snooty Fox before re-emerging under its current title after a period of closure when it was reprieved from conversion to private housing.
Although the interior has been refurbished and open up, it does retain a degree of its original character with low beams, exposed stonework and open fires but the fresh new furnishings probably need a bit of wearing in to give the place a bit more of a homely warmth. A few old local photos adorn the walls but it is generally quite plain in the décor department. There is also a small room tucked away at the back of the pub and a small decked patio in the car park.
Service was bit indifferent on our visit and despite being virtually empty, the sole member of staff was deep in conversation with the pubs only other punter without so much of an acknowledgement of our presence for a couple of awkward minutes which didn’t make the place feel to welcoming.
As for beers, 3 ales were available, 2 locals (Island Nipper and Goddards Fuggle De Dum) plus one from “overseas” (Ringwood 49’er). The pub does have a good reputation for food although we didn’t tray any. A blackboard was advertising Steak night which included a monstrous 68oz steak if you fancy eating an entire cow with the trimmings.
This was very much a “passing by” visit and whilst there was nothing untoward about the place, it didn’t really strike me as being an essential stop although our timing probably meant we didn’t see it at its best

I L left this review about The Dark Horse
I believe this is the pub that was called the The Snooty Fox. It looks as if its has recently been refurbished. Plenty of low beams and stone inside. There were three ales, two of which were local breweries. The food menu is extensive.
