Fairly corporate chain place with a bit of imposed character, two aged (1704) buildings knocked into one. Large front bar is fairly bland and open-plan, save for a wood burning stove. Mute TT racing on the telly and awful canned music. There’s a rear dining area in a nice wood panelled room with function room beyond and a sadly basic patio garden. Five ales on with not much imagination; Thwaites Wainwright, Bombardier Gold, Pride, Ringwood Razor Back and Goddards Fuggle. The Fuggle was a very good drop, to be fair. It’s worth putting your nose round the door to see if the line-up shows any variation but otherwise, it’s crawl fodder only. 6.5

GBG12 tells us that this pub was originally called The Trumpeter and dates back to 1704. It 0sconsists of a large, wooden floored bar to the front and a large bar at the rear, which is mostly reserved for diners. Behind the rear bar is an area set up for entertainment which hosts regular live music acts. The pub is friendly towards dogs and families, provided they are well behaved. It's proximity to a marina also makes it very popular with the yachting fraternity. I found the staff very amateurish and one quite rude.Food was really good, and the portions were generous. Five ales on, I had pints of Ringwood Best and Goddard's Fuddle-Dee-Dum, both in tip-top condition. Highly recommended, and I'll certainly be back in future, but please, Landlord, sort out the boys' attitude.

This historic town centre pub dates back to 1704 and was originally known as the Three Trumpeters. It has over the years expanded into the adjoing building and also been extended to the rear where it has swallowed up the old stable block.

The interior consists of an L shaped main bar consisting of mostly wooden wall coverings, bare floors, low beamed ceilings, stone fireplaces, multple TV's and copious nautical bric a brac. A 1954 Whitbread price list on display gives an interesting insight into past drinking behaviour. There are a few divisions that create some intimate hidey holes. To the rear is the Stable Bar that on occasions doubles up as either a pool room, function room or music venue. It has its own separate bar which is open only at peak times. Outside is a walled patio with several covered benches.

The 5 ales during the course of our brace of visits over a long weekend included Ringwood Best, Theakston Best, London Pride, Hobgoblin and the local Goddards Fuggle De Dum. We tried several between us and had no issues with quality although price wise I have no idea as we were in large rounds but it didn’t seem excessive.

On a Saturday night when there is live music the place does get uncomfortably heaving and a bit loud with a fairly youngish (but not boorish) customer base but off peak it can be a quiet haven and quite relaxing.

Certainly a must do pub if visiting Cowes but on occasions it may be a bit noisy for those with more genteel tastes.
