This quirky village pub has been put through the ringer in the last two years, having to contend with the Covid pandemic, structural damage to the property and most recently flooding which all led to the renovations that Old Boots refers to during his recent visit.
Fortunately by the time we visited in early October this had all been completed and the pub was open both inside and out. The inside is quite small and is now three distinct separate areas around the main bar. There is a small lounge room to the left and a smaller lounge area to the right of the bar and then a small sports bar area beyond the lounge room on the left with dart board and flat screen TV.
But also big changes have taken place out the back where the original space has been greatly extended and large tented extensions now cover what was once the small car park space providing a well thought-out outside seating area with big patio heaters and a good use of wooden fence panels to divide it up into several distinct areas and some interesting wall graffiti artwork to give the place some character. This area is now used as the pub restaurant and also has its own toilets. But there are big screens for the sport and its own garden extension bar for when it’s used for other functions such as live music.A nice feature of this section is the ordering buttons on the tables Old Boots refers to below which are connected to green staffs watches by WiFi
Three ales were available from barrels on the main bar and these included the local Yates Brewery Golden Ale which was in good condition. Can’t remember the other two, but other members of our group tried these and reported them as being fine.
A lot of people use this one to eat and that was primarily the reason we were here also for lunch and in that respect, although there is no sandwiches, there is a really good range of stone baked pizzas with plenty of vegetarian options available.
Noticed signs in the pub for quiz night on a Monday and cribbage night on a Wednesday.
Have to say I liked what they’ve done to the place and I really wish them well and hope they succeed after the turbulent last two years.

Sadly when we called in much of the pub was under renovation and they were still in covid mode so we drank and ate in a lean-to at the back, there was also a heated tent where the bar was. I plumped for a Youngs Special, whoever brews it these days it was fairly ordinary stuff even for southern beer, although it was served in a plastic “glass”. To be more positive the staff were good and the portions more than generous. Ordering etc is by wi-fi connected buttons.

A rather modernised and sterile place, looks much nicer from the outside. Two bay windows, modern slate floor, pseudo-lounge feel. One item we did like were the stylized wall hangings of old Bembridge. Three ales, Nethergate Growler (poor), Butcombe Bitter and Moorhouse White Witch. Two box ciders. Glacially slow service from a barmaid who didn't even know the stock and had the customer service skills of a dead slug. We noted the blue paper towel pyramid atop the bin behind the bar as she spent her time doing nothing. Only one other customer and it felt like a place that had lost its way. Given it’s GBG-listed, a crashing disappointment. 4.5
