Bucking Fastard left this review about The Red Lion

Dating from 1538 ,one of the oldest buildings in the village and formerly a monastary this pub is now a free house. The front entrance leads into a lobby with a few seats and an electric organ, while the island bar is to the left past a couple of upturned barrels which act as places to rest your pint if drinking at the bar.Beyond the bar at the front of the building is a room with a real fire, traditional furniture and a flat screen while there is another flat screen in the rear room behind the island bar. There is a seperate wood panneled corridor to the loos.To the right of the front door is a restaurant branded as Coco de Mer with modern pine furniture and contemporary design.
I was in for a meal and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was despite few other diners being present.Prices also very reasonable with some dishes discounted to £5 at lunchtime, most mains £6- £9 with light bite options. The menu contains a wide selection of pub grub staples. The somewhat loud music radio channel was a little out of keeping but only a small fly in the ointment.
This is very much a locals pub and televised sport brings in a good crowd, quite laddish in nature. There are three handpumps normally dispensing nationally available brands (Adnams Bitter and Doom Bar on my trip ),but this was supplemented by a good Adnams IPA which made a nice change.
It is worth noting that to the rear is an extensive garden with child play equipment behind the numerous barn outbuildings
Definately a pub of two halves,I wouldnt hesitate to call again for a decent meal.
