Handsome backstreet boozer that is only a couple of streets back from the main high street.

Impressive external facade and colouring. Inside is separate rooms but open plan, with dining areas and a darts, drinking area. Of course, the locals all sit around the bar.

Beerwise, there was a good selection of LocALES - breweries that I wasn't too familiar with. I went for a Leighton Buzzard Brewery Restoration X. £4.20 sounded a touch pricey and I would have hoped for a better glass than a Marstons 61 Deep.

All in all a decent local pub and worthy of its inclusion in 2020 Good Beer Guide.

Called in on our coach trip of the area, and found this 2018 Good Beer Guide pub to be a friendly back street local. Family friendly and food served. We enjoyed 2 beers from Farr Brew from the choice of around 5 ales. Morris dancers were in the suntrap patio.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Dec 2012
Difficult to find tucked away is a residential part of town, this is a true community local popular with the residents, which in this part of the world means young professionals, earnest CAMRA types with a smattering of students.Women feel comfotable enough to pop in for a wine and the atmosphere is friendly and authentic. The barman looked uncannily like the chief casketeer in the Viz comic strip.
The interior is charming with three different sections,to the left of the front door there is a real fire with a wooden banquette running around the wall and scrubbed wooden tables, while the bar is at the back of the building.A lot of wood panneling is used on the walls. There is a walled garden outside ,free wifi and no muzak, gaming machines ,flat screens etc to detract from the positive vibe inside.Decent looking food served until 9.30pm.
The current owners revived this previously failing Ind Coope pub in 1981 and can now boast 31 consecutive years in the GBG.However I thought the selection on my trip was stuck in a time warp with some uninspiring brews from the six handpumps namely CW "Youngs" Special,Tring Sidepocket and Death or Glory,Wadworth's 6X and Old Timer,Adnams Shingle Bells and Old Rosie Cider.Three festive ales seemed too many ,and the breweries chosen are hardly at the cutting edge of the real ale scene .Maybe I was unlucky,or is this a case of resting on laurels ?
If you are in Tring ,you are obliged to pop in to see what's on,but I would sound a note of caution after this latest visit,a few notches down from previous trips.

UPDATE
A change of guard has radically improved the real ale range ,gone are the boring brown beers and in their place a decent selection with my Slaters Black IPA terrific as well as a very good Chiltern 300.Food is more of a feature these days although the plastic menus on every table didn't inspire confidence but thankfully most punters still come in here just to quaff and it retains a proper pub atmosphere. There is a good mix of customers, many regulars around the bar and a great interior with a real fire in one section belting out the heat.Upgraded from me,dont miss this one if you are visiting Tring.Deservedly back in the GBG 2016.
