This pub is situated on the B1368, which winds its way through several villages in Hertfordshire, parallel to the A10. Whilst I'd done a few of the pubs in villages to the south, I decided to try a few further north on the road on my latest visit to Hertfordshire.

The bar is situated on the road side of the pub. It is quite modern in design and split by pillars. There appeared to be another large room at the rear, which is not in use.

The friendly and chatty landlady explained that they used to do food. So, perhaps the rear room was more of a dining room. Nowadays, food is limited to visiting food vans, which arrive on a regular basis.

The only other customers present on our arrival, were a group on the decked patio area at the front. When we left, it was empty.

The 2 real ales were Dark Star Hophead & Lacon's Encore.

Update: A return visit last week and this pub has had a bit of a refurbishment since my last visit and seems to have undergone a change of ownership last year. It’s a bit smarter, especially the restaurant section, but the bar area is still fairly plain and an interesting mixture of different table and bench seating.
One key change is that the strange false barrels are gone and replaced by four proper hand pumps on the bar and these were dispensing GK IPA, Doombar, Dark Star Hop Head and Trumans Swift for our latest visit. And both the Dark Star and Trumans beers tried were well kept.
Also, as this visit was in daylight I can also confirm that there is a very nice beer garden on the far side of the car park to the pub.

24th April 2011: Interesting rural free house situated in the village of Barkway on the B1368. The small bar area is like someone’s front room and then there is a larger restaurant area to the rear. There are usually at least two real ales on, sometimes three. And as the enthusiastic reviewer below mentions these are served from taps in three false barrel fronts at the back of the bar. The real barrels are in the cellar and the beer is pumped to the dispensing taps.
Highwayman from the Buntingford Brewery and Rebellion IPA are the two regular beers and Slaters Why Knot was the third on my last visit. And there are usually bottled dark beers, mild and porters are usually available. And there is a seriously good collection of whiskies (over 40 I believe) if you like that sort of thing
I’ve never eaten here , mainly because it is a gastro pub menu at gastro restaurant prices, which means reasonable is not how I would describe it if you were looking for a pub lunch. For example the mains average around £13.00. .
Worth popping in for a beer though if you are passing.

A fantastic family run authentic village pub. 3 real ales served from tap from pseudo barrels behind the bar. Very friendly and welcoming staff, cosy restaurant with real fireplace (and in bar), wonderful gastro food served with real attention to detail at very reasonable prices and exceptional thought, and quality. A MUST!
