Modernised old pub with bare floorboards and wood furnishings giving a slightly upmarket feel, nice and bright with a bit of sun. At the back is a good riverside terrace with its own bar in an outbuilding, and a barn with pool and darts. As said before, the closest McMullens pub to the brewery so a fair range of their beers - 3 on draught and 4 on keg. Good enough.

ORIGINAL REVIEW August 2010
The nearest pub to McMullens brewery ,so the de facto tap which always has the full range of Macs beers,namely AK ,Country and Cask which on my trip was very well kept ,not something that can be said in every Macs pub.Through the front door is the bar with on the left a seating area of oblong tables ,chairs and fitted bench seating while to the right of the pub there is a larger area with seperate tables and chairs.The dominant theme in here nowadays is televised sport with a large plasma and even larger drop down screen in the main seating area and a small plasma in the quieter seating area to the left.Different Europa league games were being shown on the various screens although not at peak volume,but the coverage did dominate the atmosphere.At weekends there are occasional tribute bands and this is quite a lively laddish pub,not really a place for a quiet drink.OK for a crawl venue with the best Macs beers in town,there is a useful outside terrace overlooking the end of the River Lee Navigation.
UPDATE
McMullens have spent a lot of money on a refurb to good affect.Gone is the sports bar atmosphere,karaoke,live music now replaced by a lot of McMullens breweriana and some interesting furniture.A glass topped table made from the old pubsign,a magnificent 12 seater table made from a sign that used to hang at the brewery round the corner,a restored large brick fireplace in working order and a charming two person alcove by the door to the enlarged and smartened up riverside terrace.The vibe is much more upmarket,a little bit gastro and food is served until 8pm.
The five chrome handpumps offer the full range of regular ales namely AK,Country Bitter,Cask and IPA while there was also a seasonal brew in the shape of Gorgeous George on my trip.As the defacto brewery tap ,the ale quality is top notch so if you are doing a bit of beer tourism in the area this is the place to head to for Macs beers and a bit of history about this family brewer.
Only fly in the ointment was the R&B dirge muzak popular with the young bar staff but not the paying customers.For a Thursday evening the pub wasnt that busy maybe as beer prices have escalated,Country at £3.50 and AK at £3 was a shock but then someone has to pay for the refurb.

I thought this place to be a little bland and apart from the nice paved beer garden out the back that runs alongside the river I thought that this was another unremarkable McMullens pub in Hertford. The barman was very friendly and the usual Mcmullen ale range was available along with a standard draught selection from which I was served a decent Guinness.
There is a plasma screen in the bar area and another out the back, but these were showing an under 17s football game so they were muted and some inoffensive background music was playing.
This pub was close to the end of my Hertford crawl so maybe my views of it are not the best due to me being sick of Mcmullen pubs by this stage. I’ll make a point of revisiting next time I’m in this area just to make sure I‘ve not reviewed it unfairly.
