A beautifully appointed pub in a charming village, overlooking the cricket pitch with a game in full swing during our visit. Looks good from the outside too, what with it having its own aged walnut(?) tree out front. Comfortably aged interior, traditionally done and well-described below. A Hall and Woodhouse pub, disappointed to only see First Call on as the singular ale, though it drank very well. Quiz night advertised for alt Tuesdays. Neatly trimmed and planted outside front garden which allowed for a very pleasant 20 minutes watching the chasing the team get skittled out for very few runs. Ticks a lot of boxes and the presence of an extra ale would really have helped push this up higher. Either way, it’s well-worth seeking out on a summer’s day for a quintessentially English experience.

One of the big plus points of this rural pub is its location overlooking the village green and cricket pitch in the charming Berkshire village of Littlewick Green. Littlewick Green is in its own cul-de–sac road system just of the A4 between Maidenhead and Reading and is famed for being used as a location for Midsummer Murders and you can see why when doing a circular loop of the village green.
The Cricketers is a nice looking village pub which was presumably separate rooms in days gone by but now internally is a collection of areas based around the L shaped bar.
You enter into a small wood floored room with the smaller bar section in front and some seating around the sides that still retains a bit of a public bar feel. The pub is dog friendly in that dogs are allowed into this section of the pub.
Then to the left through an entrance is two further wood floor, half timber walled areas around the larger bar section, which are smarter with a lounge feel and although with a few bar stools is mainly with tables set for dining. And then off of here is an additional area which looks like it is probably an extension to the original building and this houses a smaller dining room and the toilets.
Then outside there are bench seating to the front of the pub and to a section to the side from most of which you can get a superb view of the village green.
Surprisingly this small pub is owned by Hall and Woodhouse and their beers are available. There were four hand pumps on the bar but only two on operation for my visit which were Badger and Hopping Hare and the Hopping Hare was a very well served pint.
There is also quite an extensive lunchtime and evening food menu advertised on the chalk boards, but I didn’t try this.
Also surprisingly, but good to see, the pub was quite lively for my early evening visit and was quite busy with locals and their dogs. This was possibly due to the fact that there was a young lads cricket game taking place on the green and the pub was the preferred choice for parents who have seen it all before.
This was a very nice pub and the only drawbacks I could see was the lack of car parking space, although there is enough room to park around the village green, and the fact that the locals were treating the place as their own social club, and it doesn’t take many standing around the bar or talking between the two rooms with their large dogs (the residents of Littlewick green don’t seem to do Jack Russell size) prostrate in the gap between the rooms to make it busy.
I am very tolerant of the behaviour of locals because they put a lot more money behind the bar of their pub than I do, but others could find having to run an assault course of large dogs and loud vertical drinkers to reach the toilets a bit off putting.
Anyway, it didn’t affect me as I left the locals braying to each other and took my very good pint of Hopping Hare to one of the outside tables, and as the sun set on this particularly fine evening, and with the sound of leather on willow coming from the green I couldn’t help but find myself beginning to hum Jerusalem.
