West Berks GOB, Ringwood Boondoggle and Ramsbury Gold (NBSS 3) on this visit, along with a fairly palatable Ramsbury lager. Shows the 6 Nations. Best pub in Kintbury, still.

An overdue revisit as part of a walking trip along the towpath. Looks to have had a refurb from previous, and there are now three rooms available which I didn’t recall being there last time. The garden also seems to have gone up a notch and was a really pleasant place to get a well-deserved beer down my neck. Three pumps with two on; West Berkshire Good Old Boy and Banks Sunbeam which was superb, possibly the best pint I’ll have this year. So many positives, however the visit was spoilt by the sloth-like staff who were more suited to an old folks home than serving a queue of people in a pub on a sunny Saturday afternoon – 10 minutes we waited for them to serve four people in front of us. Ah well. Rated 7

Closest pub to the station, commanding an enviable canal side location and enjoyable outside drinking area by the water’s edge. The inside is fairly modern and somewhat bland (the Linda Barker ‘distressed’ look), though with much of it aimed at the foody brigade that’s almost par for the course I suppose. Four ales on and the three sampled were in good shape if rather expensive – I was too far gone to make a proper note but I do recall West Berks Good Old Boy being one of the four. Gigantic glass dispense units for Sipsmith gin were an interesting centrepoint behind the bar and part of the bar top is made of old pre-decimal pennies. It was the end of a long crawl and my notes are rather sparse but it certainly begs a repeat visit in the not-too-distant future when the sun’s out. Whether it’s much cop otherwise I’m less sure about. Rated 6

The Dundas Arms sits in a wonderful canal-side position, is an attractive building and is generall y a very pleasant place to be. However - the pub itslef does not live up to the potential. I came in here for the first time in two years as it's the closest pub to the hotel I was using, and I'm sad to say it has not improved. The biggest problem is the landlord. He is unsociable, verging on hostile, would rathetr talk to his cronies than serve beer, and the food he allows to be dished up is unappealing and not good value for money. The beer (Adnams, plus 3 other beers on) was fine, well kept and at the right temperature, but the general atmosphere made it unenjoyable. I'll eat and drink elsewhere next time I'm staying here.
