Intrigued by ETA's review below I thought I'd give it a go, as I was walking past anyway. Again very busy as expected pre kick off but I found nothing intimidating about the place while I was there and service was friendly.
There was one ale on Greene King Land Of Horpportunity but given earlier experiences that day where everyone else was on the lager I opted for half a Guinness. There was a decent food menu and it looked and smelt pretty good.
I don't know if they've actually got their act together since Ians visit or just it's circumstance but I found it ok here.

A large mock-Tudor corner pub with a separate function room, The Barn, at the rear in a courtyard which doubles as a litter bin and vomitorium. There are large TV screens used for showing football matches, and the pub has a long association with Fratton Park and the sport; previous landlords have been ex-Pompey players. There is a dartboard and pool table, although the throng when I visited made both unreachable. Closure of the human waste bin that was Mr Pickwicks has meant its contents have flowed 100 yards down the road into this alternative cess pit. Apart from the smell and the profane grunting, the atmosphere was extremely hostile, and I was jostled and abused both on entering and, after not bothering to buy whatever it was they were serving instead of the ales on the 4 reversed-clip pumps, on the way out. The female bar staff wasn’t particularly polite either. Needs sterilising.
