A chaotic pub in a picturesque setting which appears to justify the very high prices. There is a covered terrace at the side and a single large bar with various brick and timber features inside including an attractive fireplace. The ineffectual foreign staff didn’t make us feel welcome, indeed the opposite was true, and there was no sign of a grown-up being in charge. Clearly others thought the same as the only other customers were a trio of pseudo-intellectuals braying in the corner. As Last Orders approached they had already been putting the chairs on the tables for half an hour and we were made to move to the bar to finish our drinks. There was an impressive-looking range of ales – Flack’s Double Drop, Boondoggle and something called Bugle Ale plus craft beers including Revisionist Lager, Inedit Damm wheat beer and Shipyard American Pale Ale. Sadly the ales were not in good condition. We didn’t feel at all welcome here – it was very false and slightly weird. I doubt we’ll make the effort to spend our brass here again.

Throwing distance from the King & Queen, this is an oblong-shaped building located on a sharp left-hand bend and raised up from the one-way road. A staple-shaped bar faces the entrance with a "hidden" dining area located to the left. To the right, there's a nice hidden area behind a badly-pointed faux fireplace stack (freshly-sawn logs occupy a nook where the fireplace would have been) with two-third dark wood panelling, large rugs covering a flagstone floor and mates-style pub chairs and small circular dark-wooded tables - all very cosy. The three ale line-up consisted of Flack Manor Double Drop, Itchen Valley Bugle Ale and St Austell Tribute - the former two good to see from a local point of view, but not in the best of shape - a half of Charlie Wells Triple Hopped IPA (keg) upped the ante, and despite the ale misgivings, there was just enough here in terms of the ambience and well-judged dry / wet divide to earn it an extra mark.
