An attractive whitewashed pub in this small village, it consists of three rooms and has a cosy ambience with low ceilings and friendly staff. The main bar area is the middle of the three rooms, and this was very pleasant with plenty of oak timberwork and old flagstones on the floor, as well as some wood strip. A large brick fire-place was to one side with a wood burning stove, and there was also a Chesterfield sofa and an old globe a well as a number of country pictures on the wall. A smaller snug was to the left and this too was quite cosy with maroon paintwork and a fire-place complete with an old bread oven that had been converted in to a seating area with a table top chess board. A plasma was in the corner showing the Grand Prix, but the volume was off and so this was not too intrusive.

A larger room to the right is a restaurant area and this had a somewhat dated appearance, rather like an old lady’s drawing room I thought. The paintwork here was pale green with a dark green feature wall and a number of gilded mirrors and oil paintings were hung up. The floor was wood strip with a large rug covering most of it. An old wooden sideboard was in one corner complete with a mirror, tassel shaded lamp and artificial flowers. Old floral curtains and a trumpet completed the look.

The food menu was a step or two up from your usual pub grub, although nothing too out of the way with most main courses being in the £10 - £13 range. There were a few pub dishes such as Fish & Chips and a Burger, but on the whole the choices were somewhat more adventurous. My Smoked Haddock in a creamy sauce with mashed potato, spinach and a poached egg was very tasty and a decent portion. Some Belly pork on the other side of the table was very attractively presented and equally well received. We went on a Monday when all main courses were half price, and whilst I’d have been quite happy paying the regular amount, this made it a real bargain.

Beers on tap were Greene King IPA and Old Nutty Hen, although a third pump appeared unused so there may on occasions be others. The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk. Overall I thought this was a very nice pub with great food. If only they could make their drinks selection a little more inspiring it would be a real cracker.
