Of interest to those who appreciate historic architecture or anthropoid social morphology, but not much good for ale drinkers. Well described by Quinno, below, it felt grubby and was characterised by loud music and loud people. The staff were amongst the thickest I’ve encountered, slow to react and unfamiliar with beers. The atmosphere was further spoiled by rotating disco lights which seemed to serve no obvious purpose. On sitting down we were asked what we’d like to drink – as we hadn’t been allowed to look at the bar we asked what was available. Five minutes she came back and informed us there was a good range of real ale – Guinness, Peroni, Old Rosie, John Smiths and Doombar. One out of five seemed an acceptable score so we went for the Doombar, which was in very poor condition. Definitely one to avoid.

An old coaching Inn now modernised, a long single room of little note, beers GK IPA and Doom Bar. No thanks.

A bit nicer than when it was the Victoria, but little notable change in décor and emphasis. GK IPA, Elgoods (ok) and Thatchers Heritage Cider. Unusable dart board. Gig being set up, so live music presumably a regular feature. Not a particularly avuncular drinking experience.

Formerly the Globe, this place has had an overhaul and now goes by the rather nice but oddly misleading name of Victoria Cross (presumably because of the squaddies, but I didn't spot any obvious army memorabilia). It’s basically a long narrow room set over two levels and you need to take a couple of steps halfway down to get to the sunken bar area. Furniture is an uncomfortable mish-mash of high tables and stools, with some more comfy stuff wedged in at the pub’s front by the bay window. Annoyingly the loudish music was utterly unrelated to the pop videos being shown on the TV’s. Another Andover pub sporting a laminated ‘no drugs’ sign. A single ale, GK IPA, which was cheap and in fair shape. Barman was pleasant enough and whipped up a cup of instant coffee for Mrs Quinno served in a comedy builders mug. Seems to have no clear vision of what it wants to be, despite its prime location. Those who want to vertically drink would surely be more likely to frequent the more comfy surrounds of the Redbridge or the JRF? Rated 4
