Tucked away up a backstreet and with little or no lighting at the front, we didn't initially think the Railway was open. Closer inspection of the other side of the building revealed some kind of festive lighting display on the far side of the building!

Inside was a classic village local with friendly customers, a friendly barmaid and a wonderful selection of local ciders. The real ale selection was fairly boring, with just Doom Bar & Butty Bach on. However, ciders were Weston's Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig, Fisher's Organic & Perry, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon, Ross-on-Wye Major SV & Oak Cask, Oliver's Shezam & Fine & Jolter Press Squeal.

With 5 ciders I'd never tried before, I was spoiled for choice, eventually opting for the sweetest of the lot, the Squeal. I could and probably should have stayed here much longer for a few more. Best pub of the day we visited in Gloucestershire and I can easily see why it regularly wins the local CAMRA cider pub of the year prize.

A really old and atmospheric pub with some really old and atmospheric locals! Tucked away just off the main street (at clock tower) this friendly local has two rooms, liberally strewn with railway memorabilia and othe detritus. But it is the range of beers and especially ciders and perries that is its main draw and has secured various awards. Definitely a classic from a dying breed.
