A busy, lively town pub away from the city centre, currently run by Ember Inns. The house was built by Mitchell and Butler in 1907, when the eponymous King reigned. The original mock-Tudor style has been toned down by the current corporate colour-scheme. The garden has been severly depleted, most of it turned into a car park. The bars have been opened out to form an open plan single room, part screened off with removable screens, carpeted, with a wood burner at one end. It’s a decent local, a mix of Edwardian grandeur and modern low-brow functionality, with a large TV and gaming machines in what would otherwise make a fine sitting room. The food is mass-produced fodder, rather uninspiring and over-priced. The staff and regulars were friendly enough. Ales on were Proper Job, in good condition, plus Ember IPA and Bombardier. A fair watering hole.
