A surprise visit, due to being an hour early for our reservation at a nearby restaurant (Mrs C's arrangements)! Although food is clearly an important part of the trade here, there does not appear to be a demarcation of eating and drinking areas so a bit more of a pub feel than many others. The beer selection isn't adventurous but the quality is generally acceptable. However, the prices are on the high side for the town with GK IPA at £4.60 a pint.

A few yards from the terminally run down Round Green Tavern, and in the same ownership, this pub is thriving while that one is failing. Obviously helped by dropping the definite article from the pub name, or more probably by sprucing the place up, improving the beer and food offering and making it welcoming for families. It was certainly busy at the time of my visit, and the sight of a woman coming in with a handful of balloons just as I was leaving told me I'd timed it just right.

There are five hand pumps on the bar (see photo) with a pretty decent line up for a suburban Greene King pub, albeit at £3.60 a pint, which is slightly higher than I normally pay in Luton. I went for the sole non-GK beer, the Hogsback TEA, which is a traditional English ale, just like it says on the pump clip. It was in good condition, though I'm not sure I'd cycle out this way again just for a beer (there are more interesting line ups in the town centre). But for those who live in this part of Luton this is a real destination pub.
