Not sure what is happening with this place now, as there was no signage when I came to take a photo and it looks like they were in the process of repainting the walls. Perhaps the signs will go back up when the painting is done. More importantly, the opening hours (described in a notice on the door - see photo) are severely limited: Monday to Friday 5pm to 9pm. Weekends closed! The notice describes the pub as being primarily for local people, so none of that crafty beer tourism allowed here...

Backstreet pub that has recently gone upmarket at the expense of the skittle alley that is now a dining area (off to the left). The main bar section retains a fairly traditional feel and to the right up a couple of steps is a small lounge room that hosts various knick-knacks and is quite a pleasant spot. There were plenty of ales on (seven, if I recall), the selection was fairly good (two Sharps plus a few local ones that I forgot to note). Quality a bit hit-and-miss though, only one of three I had I would describe as being in proper good nick. The atmosphere on a busy sunny Sunday afternoon was taken back to pre-2007 by the haze of smoke throughout the pub…don’t get too excited nicotine-fiends, as this was overheated oil from the kitchen. A well-stocked board games looked interesting and the beers of the world game might have been worth a bash. I might give this one another go but it didn’t leave a particularly brilliant first impression really. I think I would have preferred more skittles and less smoke.

I believe this pub has had a change of landlord and an internal makeover since the last review.
The skittle alley has gone, turned into a dining room and there is now a definite emphasis on food.
However the beer range remains good with eight handpumps on the bar. Alongside the mainstream Sharps Doom Bar & Cornish Coaster and St Austell Proper Job there was Hobsons Twisted Spire, Oxfordshire Pride of Oxford, Gloucester Breweries Dockside Dark, Cheddar Ales Gorge Best and Potholer, and the couple we tried were well kept.
The main bar area and lounge section as you enter from the street remains fairly traditional with stone and wooden flooring , open fireplace and good selection of different comfortable seating with a few screened areas to separate it.
Then to one end of the pub is the reasonably sized dining room that was made from the skittle Alley. It may just be me but this seemed a strange soul less conversion and a bit out of keeping with the rest of the pub.
Food menu looked OK and seemed to be aimed at that space between standard pub fare and Gastro, but can’t comment on it as we were only here for a pint.
I found it a reasonable enough pub with a better than average ale offering and if I lived in the area or were staying nearby I would not hesitate to utilise it.
But if you are staying to the North of the Town centre and only have time to do one pub in Montpellier I would not suggest its worth walking the extra distance past the Jolly Brewmaster.
