A large corner pub with a L shaped lounge and plenty of well positioned and comfortable seating areas. I thought the main bar area with a polished brass counter top and a distressed painted front to be the main focal point. Another plus was that their were coat hooks along the bar front. The large hanging brass lamps along the bar and large front windows gave this pub more character.
Five handpumps with three from Arkells, Donnington Cotswold Gold and a cider. We went for the Donnington Gold, which was in good shape.

I kind of guessed that this was a former hardened drinkers pub which has been modernised in recent times to bring it up to keeping with the rest of this section of Bath road and the surrounding area.
I will respect Helen’s comment below as she obviously has more knowledge of the pub than me, but I found the interior all a bit bland and samey that you find with these makeovers. E.g. clean wooden solid oak floors, liberal use of Farrow & Ball pastel shades, a large section with wooden chairs and tables primarily for dining and then a lounge drinking section that had large sofa’s and modern art work on the walls, chose by somebody that likes to have a laughing Mick Jagger staring at you while you socialise. As Helen rightly says, at least it means it’s still open and functioning as a pub, albeit a far cry from the days when it was a Whitbred house before being taken over by Arkells in 1991.
And therein lays one of the saving graces for this place for me in that the spotless wooden bar top supports four real ales which were 2B, 3B and Moonlight from Arkells and Donningtons Gold. And the second saving grace is a very nice outside decking area and larger grassed drinking area stretching down Bath Road beyond. And on this beautiful weather bank holiday weekend it was a very pleasant spot to consume a couple of well-kept Arkells Ales.

Bath Road in Cheltenham, is unique in the fact that it is so near the town centre, yet it has an identity all of it's own. This is illustrated by the fact that it has it's own selection of pubs that seem to have survived, despite everywhere else suffering from the loss of so many pubs. The Exmouth Arms is an excellent example of this.
I remember visiting 'The Exmouth “ as a young woman, it was quite different then – it was popular, but it needed some TLC. My re-visit was a pleasant surprise, The Exmouth has moved with the times and has had a modern makeover which really suits it. However it is good to see that the original pub sign has been retained, and not replaced with something bland and boring.
The Exmouth is an Arkells pub and has a selection of 4 real ales on offer at the time of writing - Arkells 2B, 3B, Royal Basset and Moonlight. They also do a good selection of food which I didn't sample on this occasion. Instead I went and sat outside in the beer garden, with the other contented customers.
