Couldn't resist popping into this impressive, rambling pub on the edge of Epping Forest.

A gorgeous day - large beer garden - 8 miles into a ramble with water diminishing.

How unlucky to find a place that cannot even keep Stella Artois properly. Didn't trust the Greene King IPA so went continental - a headless, soapy pint, with a scummy ring on top.

At least it was cold.

I like that bit in the last review "This pub is most definitely in Essex" - seems like chav heaven with all their uncontrolled, irksome little kids running wild. In the summer you can't move for shell-suit bottoms, baseball caps and tattood torsos - and that's just the women!

Quite bizzare place,a huge Victorian gin palace situated in Epping Forest no doubt before the onset of planning permission.Built in 1887,and still operating as a hotel with restaurant, the "gastro pub" is to the right of the main entrance in an extension. The interior is full of old beams and wood features imported to make it appear ancient but the two real fires do help the ambiance.Sadly the dark red paintwork creates more of a disco feel,as does the musak. There was a huge vase of twigs on the bar ,which I had difficulty in manoevering around to discover that the handpumps were dispensing GK IPA and Tolly Cobbold Phoenix, brewed by the dead hand of Greene King as they try to pass off this hugely indifferent brew under a defunct but famous brewery name. There were lots of barmaids, but untrained and disorganised.I was glad to be in early in the session ,and would fear that chaos could ensue when busy.
Most people come in at weekend lunchtimes to eat before or after setting off to walk in the forest,so be prepared for lots of small children, many with short attention spans. The bar food is best described as passable but priced at a premium in this tourist hot spot. There is a seperate menu available in the restaurant which is to the left of the bar ,in a raised area extending back into the building.
There is a seperate night club and during the week there are dance classes, live music, quiz night, beach club(geddit?) ;everything you might expect in a town centre but not in a clearing of a historic forest.
This pub is most definitely in Essex.
