I've not been to this place, in fact I don't even remember seeing it on my infrequent visits to Ilford but it is apparently up for sale. There is a petition for Redbridge Planning Department to insist that a change of use does not happen:-

It's on the CAMRA national inventory of heritage pubs. My impression is that it has been run as a music venue with a dodgy reputation.

If pubs like the Red Lion in Leytonstone, The White Hart in Clapton and the Bell in Walthamstow can be transformed into civilised drinking establishments then surely there's hope for this place. As far as I can see there isn't much opposition in Ilford.

This is a massive edifice of a Victorian gin palace – indeed it is advertised as such on the side of the building. It’s on the CAMRA Heritage list, and still has the mahogany carved bar, cut glass, etc, the production of which the Victorians excelled at. There’s also what looks like a (green painted) Lincrusta ceiling. The rooms are predictably huge, with the room on the right containing a couple of pool tables, and other games machines spread liberally around the place. Nowadays it’s a music venue with a large stage at the back of the room behind the bar counter, and when I was in an old Man City v Arsenal clash (the one where Adebayour covered himself in ignomy) was showing on the large TV screen behind the bar.
There was just Bombardier on, with three other pumps apparently unused, and no sign of any food or menus during my Wednesday lunchtime visit. It’s definitely worth dropping in here to have a butcher’s at the Victoriana if you’re passing, or perhaps a longer visit if you’re into live music, but not worth bothering with just for the ale choice. But the locals who were in here are lucky to have such an architecturally significant pub as their local.
