Backstreet boozer in an unpromising location. Note the German bomb as the pub sign, that’s worth a point. Two rooms via a side corridor. An incredibly basic, scruffy and gloomy public bar at the front with a much more pleasant lounge/eatery behind with the tables set for dining. Not the best point of sale, just one cask clipped in the public bar but apparently there were two others behind; luckily the lass behind the bar clocked me as a RAT and let me know in good time, pointing at the blackboard to the side where today’s wares were listed. My Lacons Saint Nicks was in fair shape (NBSS 3) and the place is GBG listed. Other cask options were from Pennine and Goffs. Schizophrenic place, the drinkers are clearly supposed to inhabit the rabbit hutch bar which wasn’t for me at all.

Behind the Job Centre Plus in a rougher part of town ,it is however very close to two other GBG 2022 listed pubs (Ale House and Fat Cat) making crawling easy.
The exterior signage includes a replica German bomb,so I assume this is a post war rebuild. It's certainly good looking from the outside with a perilous steep steps to get into the tap room.Inside it's a two room classic with an island bar ,wooden flooring in the tap room, carpet in the saloon with an upright piano. There is a wood burner in the public and interesting photos of old Colchester on the walls, the welcome was friendly.
The real ale selection on my visit was Colchester Sweeny Todd,Raven, Chelmsford West Coast IPA (NBSS 4),Bishop Nick's Ridley's Rite and Maldon Silver Adder. The pump clip dispay shows that classy real ale is to be expected here.In addition there are 6 craft keg taps and many real ciders in boxes .
A proper boozer and community local, this is a must visit when in town.If crawling to the Ale House and Fat Cat there is a snicket almost opposite the pub which joins to a footpath called Artillery Barracks Folly which leads behind the houses and office block , it's a great short cut.

Two room, back-street pub a short walk from the centre of Colchester. This place recently reopened, having closed its doors when the previous long-serving landlady decided to call it a day. It has now been taken over by an enthusiastic young man who is trying to build up his customer base with various initiatives, such as a small but focussed range of ales, the imminent introduction of a simple menu and the pub’s own sports teams. He even tried to get me to sign up for a golf day with the other regulars.
The pub itself is a standard two-room set up, with a smart enough saloon bar with fake beams, carpets and banquette seating. Numerous whisky tasting notes lined the walls, but I didn't notice an especially large whiskey collection behind the bar. The public bar has a stripped out feel, with bare floorboards, a pool table, dartboard, games machines and a TV showing snooker and golf. There was also, apropos of nothing, the outline of a body painted on the floor near the darts oche.
Only Wells Eagle IPA was on when I visited, although a blackboard mentioned Nethergate Sweeney Todd and Mersea Island Oyster Stout, which the landlord confirmed were both waiting to come on. All ales are priced at a very competitive £2.00 for the time being, which should draw a few punters in. The Eagle IPA, which is their regular beer, was in good condition, although I can't say it's a drink I enjoy.
I actually expected to find this place shut as the local CAMRA magazine mentioned its recent closure, so to find it back up and running again and in the hands of an enthusiastic landlord was very encouraging. There's still work to be done before this is the finished article, but I'd be willing to give this place another try in the future.
