Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Tower

V-shaped corner pub on the main London Road into St Leonards. The furniture and decoration is very traditional, temporarily enlivened with some flags for the six nations rugby. However, what drew me (and a whole pub-full of other people), was its 5th beer festival, with ten beers on gravity from a stillage in one corner in addition to the six handpumps on the counter. The choice was excellent, the prices reasonable (especially for some of the stronger offerings) and I went for halves of Lakedown's Right Hand Down, Blood Orange Pale from Three Acres, Rabbie's Porter from Ayr and a very potent 'aged 1 year' Downlands Double DFD from Downlands. The staffing very efficient despite the numbers - excellent!

I must admit that I am very surprised I am the only person who has reviewed the Tower, especially as it is the CAMRA Sussex Pub of the Year 2015. I could understand if it was in the middle of nowhere, but it is less than a ten minute walk from St Leonards Warrior Square Railway Station. The area is not the most pleasant due to an abundance of houses in multiple occupation and piles of dog mess that remind me of when I lived in Hounslow in the mid eighties. I get to witness these delights everyday because I work in the area. The Tower doesn’t look like much from the outside and the Arsenal FC club badges on both hanging signs may put some off, but the cheery welcome from the bar staff and cosy decor soon has one forgetting that this corner pub is in the crap part of town.

The interior is much how I described it four years ago, although the plasma screens seem to have multiplied meaning that you can probably see three screens from any location in the pub. Most were switched off during my visit early on a recent Wednesday evening, but muted tennis was being shown via Sky Sports/BT Sport on a couple. The pool table remains and it wouldn’t surprise me if the jukebox was playing the same songs as my last visit. Various events are advertised such as a weekend disco and Sunday meat raffle.

The hand pump count has also increased with the addition of two more cask ales making the total count six. On my last visit I enjoyed a couple of pints of Hophead which came in at £2.80 per pint, which I consider to be excellent value. A standard draught range is also available and there are some gravity fed boxes of cider on the bar for lovers of the apple.

A lot of effort is being put into making this a very good local boozer and I will certainly return for some more well kept Dark Star beers.

The Tower is a small U shaped pub with at least four plasma screens for showing Sky Sports and during my visit on Saturday night a couple of weeks ago muted darts was being shown on one of them. There is a pool table around to the right and some 70s/80s music was playing in the background. It wasn’t very busy, but there was a relaxed atmosphere and the other pubs in the area were hardly heaving. I found the woman serving the pints to be very friendly and I enjoyed a decent pint of Guinness. Alongside a standard draught selection I counted four hand pumps and although one of these was off Hancock’s HB, Henry’s IPA and a guest beer were available.

I liked it in here and I would have no problem returning, but I’d give the advertised karaoke nights and tarts and vicars party a miss.
