This old coaching inn has been well described below. There was no sign of the XX mild on my visit but there were four rather mainstream GK beers, IPA, OSH, Abbot (doubled) and Belhaven Kittiwake. Others were Fuzzy Duck (I think) Cunning Stunt (doubled), Mighty Oak Running Man and Charles Wells Eagle IPA but the most interesting was a Plum Porter from their own microbrewery badged under the name Brewhouse. I went for this one (£3.70 including discount) and it was in great condition. It has a more understated plum flavour than the more ubiquitous Titanic one but is probably sweeter.
I liked this place a lot and would liked to have seen more of the home brewed stuff available. It's GBG 2018 listed.

A small old building in the middle of town, still owned by Greene King but leased under their "Local Heroes" initiatve and now loving operated by a very friendly leasee who really cares about real ale.The front door open into a section with seating to the left,a fireplace and flatscreen to the right and a section of the L shaped bar supporting 4 handpumps.Down a step the chequered floor walkway continues past another 8 handpumps, two of which are devoted to real cider. The ale offering is described on a board at the top end and will comprise up to 8 ales, four from Greene King and four guests. On my Thursday lunchtime visit that meant GK IPA,XX Mild and Scrum Down with guests CW Eagle IPA,Leighton Buzzard Black IPA,Sadlers One Stop Hop and Abbey Ales Sin Bin with two pumps unused.A very decent range across strenghts and styles, tasters were offered with every selection and all the ale was in fine condition. Also good to see that the GK selections included an excellent XX Mild and a decent special rather than the olde tripe usually served in their outlets.
The interior beyond the bar is small and narrow, outside in the courtyard where there are benches for fair weather drinking. The pub grub is tied to GK as supplier and was decent ,helping to soak up the ale.Very friendly and welcoming staff. It is worth noting that the owners have been given Oakademy status ,so expect their ales to appear here and the landlady produces weekly beer tasting notes for whats on offer. We were told that next up would be Titanic Plum Porter and Cuppicino so clearly ale excellence can be expected here. It's a top pub, fully deserves it's 2016 GBG listing, and would be my first port of call when next in town.Recommended and dont be put off by the GK exterior insignia.
