Nice little backstreet Harveys pub, one for the locals, basic yet charming. Two beers on, Sussex Best and Wharf IPA plus a Rosies Pig Cider. Rugby was on TV. Nice enough.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Constant Service
Came across this appealing Harvey's corner pub by chance, en route to another Hanover pub that had been recommended to me. Attractive rustic (but well maintained) wedge-shaped interior. Notably friendly welcome. Five of six handpumps in operation, offering Sussex Best, Armada, Wild Hop and the seasonal Porter (£2.10 for a half, and in excellent shape) plus Henry Westons cider. Only had time for a quick stop, but very glad I found it.

This is another pleasant pub in the back streets of the Hanover district of Brighton. The pub takes its name from the Constant Service Water Company who previously occupied the building and there is a mirror near the entrance bearing the company’s name. The interior is basically an uneven U shape with the servery on the back wall. The shape of the building means that there is a lot of space opposite the bar and this has been well filled with banquette, sofa and low stool seating. To the right hand side of the bar, there are a couple of standard tables and chairs near to a fireplace and a TV screen was on here showing the football. A ledge at the front of the pub had the day’s papers laid out on it and there was another TV screen above it with an ancient looking fag machine nearby. Board games are in good supply and I enjoyed trying to look at the pub’s record collection which was on display behind the bar, with an old record player belting out some uber-obscure world music. There is a garden which can be reached via the left hand side of the bar and you might want to stop off on your way round to browse through a large collection of mugs.
This is a Harvey’s house so their beers took up all of the hand pumps. I had a choice of Sussex Best, Knots of May, Olympia and Armada and I enjoyed a very satisfying pint of the latter. The staff were friendly enough and seemed to know their regulars. Live music was being promoted throughout the pub and appears to be a regular feature.
I enjoyed my visit to this pub and thought it was probably the pick of those in this part of town. It does suffer a bit from the pretentiousness that affects many Brighton pubs but I thought on the whole it was pleasant place to spend an afternoon and had I not been on a crawl I would have stayed longer.
