I visited Ye Olde Kings head early on a recent Tuesday evening when a handful of locals were standing at the bar and a young family were in the left rear dining area that backs onto the kitchen. The pub grub mains on the specials board were priced from £9 to £13 and a children’s menu was available. The bar supports four standard draught products and the cask ales available were long man Brewery’s APA, Harvey’s Best and St Austell’s Trelawny.

The seating area at the front of the pub has a low ceiling and an inglenook in the left hand wall. On the rear wall to the right of the U shaped bar is a plasma screen that was switched off and I didn’t notice any live sport advertisements. A dartboard case on the left hand wall was blocked by a table that could be easily moved. There was some folkie background music playing and I noted advertisements for a quiz that takes place on the last Thursday of each month. Also advertised was ELF (Every Last Friday) which is a clever idea where various acts play sets at various pubs and restaurants around the town. For more details see their Facebook page that is easily found.

Out the back is a small concreted courtyard accessible by the old horse and cart entrance. Out here are some tables and chairs that are covered by a jumbrella. To avoid a potential tongue lashing do not attempt to enter the courtyard via the rear dining area door.

I found the service to be polite, but I must admit that I was a little disappointed because the interior did not live up to the frontage of the pub. Unfortunately the olde worlde atmosphere that I was hoping for was not present due to the tired décor. Between this pub and the Railway Station are a couple of pubs that I found preferable so I do not envisage a return to Ye Olde Kings Head anytime soon.

Billed on BITE as Battle's premier pub, I found the place somewhat mediocre. Five hand pumps but only two beers didn't impress me at all.
We struck up a conversation with the barman about the smoking ban in pubs, but at no point did he cotton on that the entire place was being gassed by the fumes from his dying open fire. Mind you, the same chap maintained the recent rise in beer prices was due to the brewery – he'd never heard of the budget or the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
