Malden Man’s description, below, covers most bases, and his assumption of a Summer crowd is indeed correct. When we visited the interior was relatively empty, though the outside was heaving; there was no issue with people taking their glasses out to stand by the water and enjoy the weather. Ales on were London Pride, Doombar and Sea Fury, all in average condition. Overall a decent town pub.

A large harbourside pub with claims of age and Royal patronage which may well be true, however despite the appealing exterior, the interior has been extensively modernised, resulting in difficulty in identifying much of significant heritage. It is a large place indeed, probably the result of expansion at some time into adjoining buildings. The bar is directly opposite on entering but the place extends around to each side and to the rear to the extent that a full circuit of the place is possible. There are still good log fires which were welcome on an early January evening, one stone fireplace I spotted had the pub name carved along the top. There is some exposed stonework but this looked to be a modern addition care of the interior designers as did the abundance of distressed timbers.
Inevitably given the location overlooking the harbour goings-on, the pub is well geared to feed and water visitors but not in a brash or cynical way and we felt quite comfortable spending an hour here by the fire with our drinks. I suspect it is heaving come the summer.
On the handpumps were Adnam's Broadside, Sharp's Sea Fury, Tribute and Otter Bitter.

Good little quayside pub with superb views outside and plenty of little nooks and crannies inside. Friendly staff, but a tad disappointed to find only Courage Best and Directors on - albeit in excellent condition. Overall average.
