A basic, no frills boozer a short stroll away from the town centre. First impressions were not good, with a noisy young toddler running around and nearly colliding with us as we entered. We should have taken that as a sign to leave, but as I find it very difficult to leave a pub without having a pint, we persevered.

The pub is a sideways U-shape in layout, with the front bar having rough boards on the floor, a curved, wooden bar counter, wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and some old painted wallpaper up above. Wooden bench chairs with red upholstery were arranged around the perimeter of the room, and there were numerous pictures on the wall, many of old ships from the White Star Line and old photographs of the town. A piano was in one corner along with a plasma, although this was turned off and there was also a fruit machine.

It could really have done with a little background music, either from the plasma or something else. Besides the toddler’s parents, there was only one other punter in there which made it all too easy to hear the landlord swearing down the phone. Later on a large horde of cackling females arrived so it went from one extreme to the other.

The only beers on tap were both from Palmer’s, with their Best Bitter and Copper Ale. It looks as though 200 may usually be on, but the pump clip was turned round on this occasion. The solitary cider was Thatcher’s Gold.

Even though it's a Palmers house, this is a decent little backstreet boozer - not at all grubby but it does have bare floorboards and old tables and chairs - a bit like drinking in your grandad's front parlour - which may be off-putting for those of a more delicate disposition. It is filled with locals but with a good welcome for strangers. Copper Ale and 200 were both very well kept. Above average and worth seeking out in preference to the tourist traps near the sea front.

A detached back street pub, with yellow render and green painted exterior.

The interior is open plan, with a pool room down on a slightly lower level. The decor was white walls and wood panel. There is a dart board and Sky TV. There is a wood floor, with lots of ephemera around, and a piano in the corner. I found the place clean enough. It is a local's pub and the small clientele all knew each other, not a problem with that, but i was treated a little abruptly at the bar when i asked for drinks.

Beer; usual tap stuff, with Palmers 200, Bitter and Copper Ale, the bitter and ale being fine.

Surroundings and beer were fine, the service a bit off. Would try it again, if treated the same way i would walk out.

Very friendly pub with a great ales selection from Palmers! Perfect for a break or to watch football or golf on TV! Also avalaible: darts, 8 pool and a jukebox. The ideal place for a drink (or more!).

The Ship Inn is a back street locals pub that is a Palmers tied house.
Once inside the pub was nice enough and seemed a bit old fashioned which i quite liked there were four Palmers beers on the bar i had a drink of Palmers 200 which was a decent drink the other beers were Palmers best bitter,Dorset Gold and Bridport best.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a few drinks in.

Pub visited 23 August 2000.
