This pub was closed for a while but has now reopened under Palmer’s Brewery. As Palmer’s pubs go it wasn’t that expensive. Three Palmer’s ales on draft, I had the Copper which was in very good condition. Its position near the sea front means that it was overcrowded with grockles when we visited which did detract from the enjoyment, but I’d be keen to come back out of season and enjoy what it has to offer, which includes a pool table and a beach bar.

Nice little waterfront boozer, point for the open fire. Two types of Thatchers and four from Palmers on. Pleasantly shabby inside in a good way.

In spite of it’s prominent position on the cobb, this seems to be quite a local’s pub at heart although it obviously does get a good selection of visitors popping in.

There’s a good sized patio area at the front to make the most of the sea views. Once you get in you immediately have to navigate around a pool table in order to get to the bar, which is rather unusual. Once past that, you find yourself in a fairly traditional, carpeted pub with black beams on the ceiling, a darts board and a trophy cabinet. The walls were a mixture of white painted plasterwork, wood panelling and exposed stone walling. Another room is off to the right with unpainted oak beams on the ceiling, mostly exposed stone walling, chunky wooden tables and a large glass frieze of the Duke of Monmouth.

I didn’t check out the menu, but noticed several specials listed on a board by the bar with most of the mains being around the £10 - £11 mark. Food doesn’t seem to be a major focus here though, and I didn’t notice anybody eating on a recent Friday evening visit, although it’s possible that they had stopped serving by the time we were in there. Music policy seemed to be predominantly 80’s, and there was a good selection of locals in enjoying a pint.

Beers on tap were all from Palmers with their Dorset Gold, Copper Ale, Best Bitter and 200. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Old Rascal.

Nice little pub although it can get packed with tourists, beers well kept (although limited range on offer and they're all Palmers like most of Lyme), OK normal pub grub at reasonable prices, staff friendly. It would make a nice local, but only out of season.

nice but not my cup of tea. the prices are a little excessive and the service wasn't brilliant. not overly impressed, the type of customers in here really let it down. lovely outside area though.

The Royal Standard is a decent looking pub that is on a busy street that is close to the sea front.
This pub has got one largish room and if you go to the back of the pub there are great views of lyme bay. This is a Palmers tied house and there were four of their real ales on the bar i had a drink of Palmers best bitter which was very nice the other beers were Palmers 200 and Dorset Gold.
I thought this was a decent pub with nice beer and even better views.

Pub visited 23 August 2000.
