Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The United Services

Basic backstreet Shepherd Neame pub, retaining a two-bar layout. Limited furniture and decor, with a TV at the front of the main bar and a pool table to the rear. Small beer garden behind. Just MasterBrew (£3.00) available from two handpumps.

Dating from around the 1860s when it was called The Two Brothers, this pub changed its name around 1875 to reflect the fact that Gillingham had Army, Navy and Royal Marines all in the same garrison. The current Shepherd and Neame pub sign includes a RAF pilot, so it has moved with the times. It's a small pub in its own grounds just off the High Street, and although it has long had a reputation for trouble, I saw none during my visit. There is a garden used by families and smokers, and the left hand bar was still closed off. The main bar stretches the full depth of the building and is badly in need of redecoration, including removal of the 1970s Artex ceiling, and a new floor covering. The old CRT tv, gaming machine and jukebox are intrusive, but the locals and staff (including the rather domineering pub cat) are friendly enough but it would be wise not to annoy them. There was one ale on - Masterbrew - which was well and truly past its best. It's ok as a locals' haunt but I don't see my rushing back.

This place never seems to be open. When I have gone in the best on offer is manky dish water Sheps.Often see people hanging around outside smoking, whats up with the garden? Much nicer pubs nearby.

The United Services is a small Shepherd Neame pub with left and right hand bars, although the lights were out in the right hand side early on the Monday evening I visited. The usual Shep Neame draught was available and the only ale on was Master Brew as the other hand pump was unused. There is a pool table and a couple of dartboards and the TV was showing a cookery programme. I've walked past this pub a few times during the day and it has been closed so I wouldn't advise planning to stop off for lunch.

I think that there are better pubs in the area.
