Built around 1840 and known for a while in the 80s as The Sports Bar, this brick built house is currently much more imposing on the outside than inside, although the large, tatty 'karaoke' sign outside gives some indication of what to expect. Inside the environment is drab and unwelcoming, and you are greeted by a wall of unpleasant noise from a table at one end of the bar which, I am told, constitutes entertainment here. The staff were also unwelcoming and I got the impression that asking for a drink (which had to be done loudly due the the excessive noise) was inconveniencing them in some way. No real ale. No food. No reason to come back, especially as their published opening times are not always followed.

I was always under the impression that the Royal Marine was closed as there were no signs of life when I passed during the day. I was surprised to find it open this Monday afternoon so I popped in and learned that it was never closed, it just opened in the evening. Maybe some opening times should have been displayed on the exterior.
This is a single room pub with the bar along the rear wall that is stocked with a limited standard draught selection. There are a couple of plasma screens and one of these was hooked up to the jukebox for showing music videos. The other was off and I saw no signs of Sky Sports. To the right of the entrance is a pool table and a dartboard and some DJ equipment was set up on the left hand wall.
I was the only customer so it was hard to get a feel for the place, but I can imagine it getting busy with locals at the weekend when karaoke is hosted.

I wouldn’t seek this place out but it is fine for a quick pint if passing.
