A large, interesting, historic village pub, originally a coaching inn, whose interior is well described by BF, below. The staff were very hospitable, even though they were busy, the food looked like good value and the beer was in good condition. Two ales on, Proper Job and DBC’s Jurassic, both on top form. There was also a selection of bottled ciders from Cornwall and Dorset. This place could grow on me.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Sept 2015
Set deep in Thomas Hardy country,this inn was the inspiration for "The Sow and Acorn" in Tess of the D'Urbervilles.This old building has retained a two room layout and is best approached from the car park which leads to a small reception desk for guests in the 10 letting rooms.To the right is the public bar,quite small with a fine stone fireplace which houses a wood burner ,chunky wooden furniture ,ceiling beams and exposed stonework.At the rear of this room through some french windows is a skittles alley and more seating if required.To the otherside of the rear corridor is a charming small lounge with it's own bar access and a couple of banquettes,while beyond are some dining tables arranged by a large stone fireplace.Through an arch are more restaurant tables and a front door,so if entering from Fore Street dont think you have wandered into a restaurant,just keep walking to find the drinking areas.
Two real ales were available on my trip Dorset Brewing Company Jurrasic (decent shape) and the wonderfully named Cheddar Gorge Best.I was told that this is a free house which will often feature two Locales.
There is a strong focus on food with an a la carte menu and a bar food menu and you can choose from either menu where ever you are seated ,which does mean that tables in the bar will be reserved for diners,and this area is dog friendly.Expect to find family groups here as well,but outside food service hours or at quiet times a pub atmosphere persists.The food is aimed at restaurant quality although the over liberal use of salt and poorly cooked kale were errors in execution on my dish.However as an atmospheric place to visit,in a very attractive village it is worth popping in to admire the interior.
UPDATE
Revisit found again two well kept real ales but also cooking that was spot on,the previous problems were hopefully a one off.
