A narrow-fronted high street pub which runs the full length of the terrace in which it sits. There is a paved area at the back adjacent to a car parking and access area. The single extended bar has indeed been renovated and this appears to be continuing. The front area is wooden floored and spacious. It has TV and projector screens and a sound-and-light system which suggests it could be used for discos, although it is currently furnished with small dining tables. The bar counter is in the centre, while the rear is a games area and smells of paint. Both these 2 areas are flag-floored. The locals were mostly harmless, if a little loud, while the staff were functional if not welcoming. The only ale on was Ringwood Best which was drinkable but not in optimal condition. OK to drop in for a quick pint but I'm not sure I'd stay aboard for a whole evening.

Seems to have had a back to the future makeover, or maybe change of hands. Popped in Friday lunchtime ['spoons was rammed full], now very much down to basics, flagged stone floor, in first bar area, varnished dark wood at small rear foody area

Only one draught available, Ringwood Best, the rest were keg types. The Best was fine

Seems very much a local's pub, but they & staff were friendly

I was part of a coach party, stopping off for lunch in Dorchester, we all had food, it was fairly priced, pub grub stuff, freshly cooked, not prick & ping as far I could tell, and all under a tenner, mostly in 3 - 5 pound range

Soupy may well like this one now

Had the TV, fruit machine etc

Seems a popular pup, landlord told us he did not shut until 3 AM on Saturday

Worth looking in if in area

Soup Dragon left this review about The Old Ship

A fabulous looking exterior, possibly 17th century. The Old Ship is a terraced pub that does accommodation, in beige and undressed brick.

The interior will divide opinion, i am sure - you will either love it or hate it - I hate it of course, as it is modern - many will love it for the same reason, especially juxtaposed against the classic exterior. The pub is a long one-roomer, though on a couple of levels, with the serving bar down on the left-hand side. There are comfy half backed chairs, arty pictures, with generally white walls (they looked white) and wood flooring - too clinical for my personal taste. They did food, but i didn't eat, so can't comment on that. There was no background music and a TV, with Three Men and a Baby on - but i must stress i was in first pub of the day, so to speak. Hence there was nobody else in. The service was fine.

Beer; tap stuff with a couple of Marston's range on the handpulls - Cumberland Ale and an OK Ringwood Bitter.

I ended up being disappointed after seeing the exterior, as the interior is too modern for me and the beer choice is basic for a Midlander that gets the Marton's range ad nauseam. It needs someone else, with the modern eye to speak up for it on here.

Refurbished in March 2008, The Old Ship has been transformed into a delightful pub with excellent real ales, food and accommodation. See www.bestpubindorchester.com
