Roger Button left this review about The Nelson

The Nelson (or the www.nelsontavern.com if you want to quote the cynical signage) is situated in a small village on the shore a few miles outside of Christchurch. Like many such village pubs that would probably be under threat due to their location, it doubles up as a restaurant but unlike most it does manage to keep both entities separate.

The pub consists of a cosy, carpeted L-shaped interior that has been given a modern feel without losing too much character. The décor is quite modern but tasteful with lots of modern pictures and murals complimenting each other. There are 3 well placed TV’s showing selected sporting events and regular live acoustic/blues music at the weekends. At the rear is a spacious, tidy beer garden and there is also a car park to one side. Pub appeared to be quite popular albeit there was an England match being shown live on TV whilst we were there but it generally conveyed a civilized and friendly atmosphere.

There were 4 ales available, Greene King IPA, Ringwood 49’er, Ringwood Best and a guest, Isle of Purbeck Fossil Fuel. The pub is Cask Marque Accredited and I had no issues with service or quality.

The restaurant is housed in what would have originallty been a separate building but is now joined to the main body of the pub albeit quite separate from the pub itself. It serves mainly more up-market Thai food with main sourses around £9-£15.

I’;m not really sure how we singled tthis pub out for a visit (it wasn’t my choice) but we had a decent enough afternoon watching the football and whilst I wouldn’t actively seek it out again, it is worth popping in if you are in the area. If you do like this place then it is worth noting that there is a sister pub, the George & Dragon in Salisbury.
