Physical description much as below (except would date it rather earlier), but happy to report that the beers were in fine form and the food good too, together with a very friendly welcome. I noted it down as a very useful place to stop, especially if driving in that part of town.

A 1930s small hotel, which still does B&B and is currently owned by Wadworths. It sits in its own grounds near a busy junction and opposite a large church. There is parking on the forecourt, the entrance to which is easily missed if you drive too quickly. There is a smoking pavilion annexed to the house. On the ground floor are two bars, entered through a pleasant lobby. To the left is a restaurant area with an open fire. To the right is an L-shaped bar, half of which is carpeted and alo used as a restaurant area. The remainder of the bar has a parquet floor, around a quarter of which is raised and used by bands and other ‘entertainment’ deliverers. There is also an open fore here, and there are a TV and several gaming machines. The jukebox seemed to be stuck on Radio 2 music. The food is fine, but it is overpriced for the area. Staff were welcoming enough, there was a small group of locals hogging the bar counter, while the remainder of the clientele seemed to be from the Darby and Joan set. Jazz and blues nights are advertised, while there is allegedly a pub quiz every Thursday. Four Wadworth’s ales on draft, I had the Swordfish which was excessively over-priced, wasn’t well kept, and one of the regulars also complained that his Fosters was ‘disgusting’ (which I took to mean more so than usual). I don’t think I’ll be rushing back to drink here, but it’s probably fine as a short-term B&B.

From the entrance you have a choice of two bars. The public one on the right opens out into a large L-shape and comes complete with pool table, game machines and screens to watch sport on.

There were a number of different Wadworths ales on that were kept well.
If it is real ale that you are after, this establishment would appear to one of the best in the area and so worth a visit.
