I hadn't been intending to include this one on my tour of what I'm now inclined to think of as the dregs of Belper's pub scene. Not that the others were necessarily bad pubs, but the best beers of the day were NBSS 3.0, with plenty of others not even reaching those heights. This one didn't even get off the ground, as the words "real ale" on the front window turned out to be as reliable as Boris Johnson. When I queried this with the owner he turned his back on me! His assistant was made of better stuff and had actually had some customer service training. There was keg Bass which I was willing to try, and he made a valiant effort to make a half out of the fobbing froth that came out of the tap. He also told me that he'd been trying to get the owner to live up to the inscription on his window, so far to no avail - the guy seems perversely proud to be running the only bar in Belper that *doesn't* sell real ale!
