Bigger than I was anticipating, this conversion of part of the market hall is to the full height of the building, with an upstairs bar to supplement the large downstairs one at busier periods (or perhaps if booked for a private party?). A surprising development in a Grade II listed building, but it seems to have been done with taste and consideration. The young woman who welcomed me on a quiet weekday afternoon was friendly and helpful. There's no real ale, but a large number of modern keg beers that are usually called craft, although the one I went for was from Greene King, a pale ale called Ice Breaker. I mentioned how cold it was, and was told there's a clue in the name! I said that if I drank a beer like this at home I would certainly not keep it this cold and would take it out of the fridge half an hour before drinking, which caused the raising of an eyebrow. But apart from that it was fine. I liked it here. Most of the tables are a bit regimented, but there are some more relaxed areas; most of the otherwise bare walls have ornate mirrors; there are a number of large potted plants, and they are echoed in the wallpaper on one section of wall; the bar counter is spectacular. And the beer is "just £2.50" for a half, so it must have been craft after all.
