I wasn't a great fan of this large micro, which was previously a Nat West Bank, hence the name. The place was busy on our Saturday eve visit as to be expected. Whatpub states you get a warm welcome in here, well we found the place was sweltering, with condensation running down the windows. Six cask ales on the bar, Will is correct the beer we wanted from the chalk board couldn't be seen, as it was hidden from view. We ordered Derby Hop till you Drop which was bland and boring, 2 more Derby beers, Spice and Business as Usual, Good Chemistry Brewery Free Thinker, Pentrich Brewery Green Shadows and Haunted Hearts.

A large micropub, if such a thing can exist. There's some pavement seating and then quite a long room with the bar towards the right. Blackboards list the keg beers, the gins and the canned and bottled beers, but there's no list of cask beers. I saw three hand pumps on the bar, all from Derby brewery, and went for the Dashingly Dark, which was ok but a bit too in-your-face for my taste. I then noticed three more hand pumps further along the bar (all with Derby brewery beers on, hiding behind some clutter. I asked the owner, who had not greeted me and failed to make eye contact when I spoke to him, why this was, and he muttered something about not having much room. Now maybe I've misunderstood, but I thought that gin, keg beer and cans and bottles kept forever (or as near as makes no odds), but cask beer goes off after a few days - wouldn't it make sense to promote the perishable stuff on one of the blackboards, rather than hiding it away behind notices for pork pies and scotch eggs? I thought of asking him how much cask beer he has to throw away on average, but if he wasn't interested in me, why should I be interested in his pub?
