Is a railway station without any rails actually a railway station? Well apparently it is, because the building that Platform 1 now resides in was once a railway station ‘for ticketing purposes’. This allowed passengers to buy tickets before catching the ferry over to Kingswear Railway Station on the opposite bank of the river Dart. The building actually looks like a railway station and seating on the path out the front and a few old GWR benches to the left add to the effect.
Inside a U-shaped bar protrudes from the right hand wall and there is booth seating along the back wall where the windows look out onto the river. A few more tables and chairs give the feel of a café bar. There was some background music playing via the television, but it wasn’t very loud. The bar supports one handpump that was drawing Tribute and there was a standard and premium keg selection. Food is available, sausage, chips and beans for £7 seemed like very good value for the area. I found the service to be polite and maybe next time I’m in the area I’ll pop in to try the food.
