Ian Mapp left this review about Ale Rooms

GBG 2022 entry. A real ale micro and gin room. Smart decor and friendly staff.

The beer offering were a bit pedestrian for a micro - standard cask offerings - Bombardier noticed. Purity Mad Goose Chosen.

A handful of ladies on Gin and Lads on Euro Lagers on a Saturday Lunch. Can they justify 5 casks? Can't imagine Bombardier generated much interest.

Music on at a comfortable level. A collection of tables and chairs in groups of 4.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about Ale Rooms

Having found the Ale Rooms & Gin Bar closed on my last visit to Kenilworth in May 2021, I returned in July 2022 to find it closed once more. A notice on the door gave opening times as 12-11 Sun-Thu and 12-12 Fri & Sat. Here I was just before 3pm on a midweek afternoon and once again, I was greeted with a closed door. Last time, I decided that the moral of the story was to ring ahead. I had failed to heed my own advice!

However, there were a couple of rays of hope. The barber next door said that it was normally open and a customer concurred. Unlike last time, I could also see through the window that some of the handpulls were clipped, which at least indicated some signs of life. A telephone call yielded no further hope. Nobody picking up. I left disappointed once again and after visiting two further pubs in Kenilworth, I called again with the time nearing 4pm. Still no joy.

However, a further call at 6pm did get answered. Sure enough they were actually open! So, I headed back to Kenilworth to find the doors open with the barmaid I had spoken to and a couple of customers. The beer range was not quite as good as I'd hoped. I tried the regular beer - Framework Friday Street. The 3 guest beers were Dark Star Hophead, Church End Goat's Milk & Green Duck Blonde. A couple of fizzy ciders from Napton Cidery were also on - their No. 5 and No. 6.

The barmaid turned out to be friendly and chatty. She too had been surprised that she wasn't taking over from anybody when she opened up. Ironically, she asked if I was a pub critique. I suspect my review may sound more like a critique, but I just try to say it as I see it! In this case, I had found a fairly decent bar/micropub and whilst I fully understand that times are had in the pub trade, visiting a pub really shouldn't be this difficult, especially in an age of widespread social media.

Original review (May 2021):

Tried visiting here on Tuesday having read on their Facebook page that they had re-opened.

Signs outside stating that they were re-open were encouraging, but despite the sunny weather, I soon discovered that they would not be opening that day due to bad weather. I managed to visit a total of 24 pubs midweek without once drinking in the rain. So, I'm really surprised that this place was closed, especially as other local cafes were doing a roaring trade.

Seemingly others were surprised too, as I met two other couples outside who were wondering why it was closed.

I was anticipating that this would be my favourite pub/bar of the day, but I'll have to wait a few more years yet before I get back to this neck of the woods.

Moral of the story - call ahead to check out if this place is really open as advertised.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Ale Rooms

Probably a bit large for a micro-pub, given that another seating area is available upstairs, and the furniture / decor are also more modern than one might expect and background music was playing. However, it was unaccountably empty when I called by on a Wednesday evening (when a number of other Kenilworth pubs were doing good business). Anyway, the real ale choice and quality is certainly not an issue, and I enjoyed my pint of XT 4 (£3.20) one of five different beers available from the six handpumps.

This is the sister pub to the Ale Rooms in Knowle and is equally good. Great choice of beers including Sadler's Pale Ale Rooms, Flipside Farthing mild, Silhill Wow Zesty IPA, Church Farm IPA and Warwickshire Duck Soup. The ones we tried were excellent. A must visit if you are in the area.
