Very smartly-run pub with something of a corporate feel, although it is independent. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the ale range is from Caledonian, and the Golden XPA sampled was in very good condition (Cask Marque listing. Slightly strange layout, with a low level dining lounge down from the street level bar.

Traditional looking from the outside, you enter into the tap room,L shaped with light wood and pine furnishings,a flatscreen and handpumps dispensing Caledonian ales Deuchars IPA,Golden Promise,Anchor Ale (rebadged 80/-) and Flying Scotsman. As the Folk Festival was in full swing it was difficult to judge ale quality from a plastic mug,but the hop light nature of Caledonian beers left me underwhelmed. Most locals seemed to be drinking the real cider anyway.
There is a lower lounge with its own bar access and this area was popular with diners while to the rear up some steps from the lounge is a sloping beer garden which was being used for gigs with the stage at the top of the slope.
Unusual to find Scottish beer this far southwest (not sure that this isnt a Caledonian tied house),an average sort of pub with very average beer.

Not a bad pub, but trying to be a gastro pub and has lost some of the cosy charm it once had. It also seems tackier than it once was in trying to vye for the passing tourist trade. Having said that, the ales are OK and the food was good value although the menu could do with a bit of livening up. Above average.

A terraced pub, i seem to have noted that it was now grey rendered with black paintwork and a front beer patio.

The interior is open plan, L shaped around the bar. Its become a moderny kind of food/beer place. Walls were white or pinkish, with wood panel. High backed leather chairs and perimeter seating, with part wood and part carpet flooring. There was a TV with Beeb on, nice fireplace and background music to a decent level. Service was functional and clientele mixed.

Beer; tap stuff, with Courage Directors and Best, Everard's Sunchaser and the majestic Doombar on Handpull. I had the Directors for a change, but it was too cold.

Didnt warm to the place and i wish i could warm the beer.
