The House of Hop has a flagstone floor with a beer shelf and stools across the front windows, a couple of large booths on the left-hand wall and a row of high tables up the centre that are faced by the serving counter across the rear. In the right rear is a small fairy light lit seating area with a high table and a sofa, it’s better than it sounds. There are lots of old pump clips and beer cans used as decoration and there was some background music playing when I was the only customer on a recent midweek evening visit. The four hand pumps were drawing North Pier Brewing’s Blackbird, Three Brothers Brewing’s Feel the Rhythm and Northern Pale as well as Firebrick Brewery’s Pagan Queen. I liked the layout and I’m sure there is an atmosphere when busier, but I tend to order a half when I’m the only customer, because, well why would I want to sit on my own when I’m out and about? Unfortunately, the woman behind the counter took exception to this and had a very frosty attitude, rated down accordingly.

Nice place but really quiet compared to the rest of town, maybe not helped by the barmaid sat behind the bar fiddling around on her phone, perched so low down she looked like Mr Chad. Modern ‘gentle pretention’ décor - exposed brick walls, flagstone floor, a copper top counter, fairy lights. A nice soundtrack played. Four cask plus craftykeg and cider. My Three Brothers Chocolate Cherry was good (NBSS 3.5) but lacked the turnover to get that top mark for a well-cellared beer. GBG listed. I wouldn’t be averse to a revisit.

Bar to rear as you enter. Seats beforehand. Five cask and nine keg. Not a bad place at all - would return.

This is a husband and wife venture, the wife owns and runs the bar, whilst her husband provides a selection of cask beer, as he works as a brewer for Three Brothers Brewery. Three handpumps on our visit, serving a house beer called House of Hop Blonde, brewed by Three Brothers. Also on was Wild Weather Full of Beans and North East IPA, another one from Three Brothers. All their beers were in top condition and averaged around £3.50 a pint. The interior had exposed brick walls, flagstone floor, a copper top counter and another feature was the casks were stored up high, in a small chiller behind the bar.

Probably a shop conversion but with scary staff, mostly a square room with booth seating one side, bench seating on the other and tall garden chairs in the middle, there’s an alcove with tall stools to one side. Three pulls at one end of the counter and a horseshoe of ten interesting kegs at the other. Fairy lights and industrial lighting can only add to the overall but gentle pretention. As the beer was so good I ignored that stuff.
